Painting Competitions?
Posted by vacaroja

Are painting competitions happening this year?  Been on the lookout for any info about them and the rules, but haven't seen anything pop up.

There are a bunch of speed painting competitions listed and mostly sold out, is there another kind of painting competition that happens?

Yes.  Every year they've had competitions for single figures, units, dioramas, etc.  And rules and such were usually published by now.

Hi there,

All the rules have been posted here:
Gen Con 2018 Miniatures Painting CompetitionGen Con 2018 will be held August 2-5, 2018 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN. Welcome to the Gen Con Miniatures Painting Competition Information Packet, where you will find all of our information in one place:

Gen Con Awards, Independent Awards, Rules and Regulations, Schedule, Fees, Category Descriptions, Judging Criteria, and more.

For Questions, concerns or registration forms prior to the convention, please contact Shannon Stiltz by email: [email protected] Gen Con Miniatures Painting Competition strives to inspire new painters to learn more about painting, and to provide an atmosphere which encourages learning, and the sharing of techniques and knowledge. The Gen Con Miniatures Painting Competition is similar to an open competition with awards given based on merit. This style of competition awards medals based on level of skill, regardless of the number of entries received. While there is still an element of competition between painters, the primary goals are to reward painters for their existing level of skill and help give them a measurable goal for improvement from year to year. Each entry will be awarded points by a judging panel, with the points weighted based on category requirements. For example: In the painting category, pieces will be judged for difficulty, creativity, workmanship, painting skill, and overall presentation, but painting would be the primary consideration. In the Open category, while painting would still be important, workmanship would play a larger role than in the Painting category. The judging panel will consist of three judges and one standby judge. The standby judge will assist as needed for pieces entered by other judges, or to break a tie in the event of matching scores for the "Best in" awards. The judges will use scorecards to assess each piece, and those scorecards will be used to determine final placement and given to entrant when piece is picked up.All entries will be judged based on five criteria:Difficulty - complexity of the piece and of the techniques used, be they painting, sculpting, design, or compositionCreativity - Use of innovation and implementation of new or unusual concepts, techniques, color schemes, arrangements, and added details. Newness and appropriate use of creative elements are importantWorkmanship - Judges will be looking for technical precision in cleaning, preparation, and construction. Thorough removal or resurfacing of flaws in the piece, seamless joins, well-constructed base or diorama elements, clean and model-appropriate modifications, and precision in original sculpts.Painting Skill - As this is a painting competition, this is very important to all categories. Judges will be evaluating the techniques used, and the overall effect achieved. Subtlety in shading, crisp detailsPresentation - the overall effect of the piece and use of elements within to create a cohesive display. Judges will be looking for Unity of style between elements, use of color to good effect, appropriate use of highlights and shadows, and whether the piece as a whole maintains the "mood" or "tone" throughout. The Categories for the 2017 competition are:
Painters: for this category, entries will be judged primarily on the technical painting skill. Overall presentation, workmanship, creativity, and difficulty will play a much smaller roll. A scratch sculpt entered in painters would not be scored based on the quality of the sculpting, but on painting alone.
