Do they Have to be tubes though?  Could you not use a modern flat screen TV?

You can definitely use an LCD. There are LCDs specifically made for mounting in old cabinets or if you're handy you can take any TV or monitor and attach it. Or, there are modern cabinet designs that are already set up for LCDs. If you're interfacing to a real arcade board, you'll need some conversion electronics to go from 15Hz RGB to 60Hz VGA. They're under $30, I believe.

Arcade collectors all know the day is coming when we have to make the move to LCDs. Either the tubes will all die or replacement electronics (like flybacks) will dry up. There's just something about that soft glow and the scan lines that adds to the nostalgia.

And believe it or not some people prefer tubes, especially in the fighting game genre
