If that holds then gencon cannot be held. It's out of their hands.

Ohio has a similar ban, but it's for gatherings over 100 or more. However if these bans last for over 4 entire months we have much, much more important things to worry about than Gen Con. Also the NBA, NHL, MLS, etc. are not cancelling their seasons. They've "paused" and "suspended" their seasons with most saying they will reevaluate in 30-days or so. The IOC has said about the Tokyo games:
The IOC has reiterated that there is "full commitment to the success of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, taking place from July 24 to Aug. 9, 2020."
Well Ohio has done that but then Ohio State Director of Health just stated that she suspects that 1% or 100,000+ people there have Covid-19. Until testing kits are readily available and processing backlogs are cleared its going to be hard to determine whats going on, generally and for organised events
I could believe that. It would also show how insignificant the virus is to most people since they don’t even notice they are sick with it. That’s the real problem with testing these days. Only South Korea is doing massive testing. The real issue is finding a way to contain it and prevent the vulnerable from getting it.

I just searched online for that.

Amy Acton is that Director of Health and the only reference I could find was a reddit linked to a Tweet from some guy named Tyler Buchanan who didn't link a video, but a still picture. I couldn't find any official reference to the 1% of Ohioans infected. If you have any direct links about that statement, I would be very interested as I live in Ohio and that's very important information.

Please note that people love throwing out numbers and percentages and unless they source a reference that can be verified, always know that 90% of the people fudge numbers 75% of the time...

here’s a link to Ohio having 1% infection. It was said during the governor’s press conference today. https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/continuing-coverage/coronavirus/ohio-department-of-health-says-100-000-ohioans-are-carrying-coronavirus

Medical professionals and scientists are who we should be deriving our info during all of this. So much media propaganda, platforming and scare tactics out there right now. And yes safety trumps pleasure. Gen Con is months away as well. Just listen to reliable sources. NPR, FB, Twitter, and 90% of social media is unreliable when it comes to real world issues.

The president is now openly suggesting that the Olympics be postponed for a year.

https://www.indystar.com/story/news/health/2020/03/12/indiana-coronavirus-updates-latest-news-covid-19/5024423002/

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has announced additional steps the state will take to reduce the spread of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19 in Indiana, including limiting non-essential gatherings to no more than 250 people.

I'm not the best at math, but i think 70k is more than 250.

The Governors of Ohio and Indiana are doing what is best for their residents. I think the Governor of Nevada is trying real hard too.

Our Mayor is taking the opposite tactic, saying the media is destroying Las Vegas. Yes, our city depends upon tourists, but If we can’t keep ourselves safe, and keep our visitors safe, then more precautions are necessary. Old people in Smokey casinos aren’t going to do so well if they get this virus.

GenCon made their statement after this announcement. The bans of people over 250 aren't going to last forever.

First off, I want to say thank you to Mike, and the Gen Con staff for monitoring this situation. The most important thing is the safety and health of Gen Con's staff, vendors, attendees, the surrounding area of Indianapolis, and anyone we will come in contact with.

This is an on going situation and most places are playing it week by week, or month by month at this point. We have no idea if this will get better, worse, or stay the same at this point. So the best thing to do, is stay calm, take care of yourself and those around you, and continue to monitor the situation.

Do I want Gen Con to happen? Of course, I love Gen Con! We all do. But I know the Gen Con staff have everyone's best interests in mind and will take all available courses of action to keep everyone safe if the convention does or does not take place.

The best thing the Vendors, Attendees, and people working the show can do right now is take care of ourselves. Keep ourselves healthy. Practice the highest quality of disease prevention and personal hygiene. Practice makes perfect, and if we all get in this mindset, we all have a better chance of staying healthy if the Convention does take place.

Thank you again to the Gen Con staff for monitoring this situation. I hope everyone is staying healthy. We all love Gen Con, but our entire industry is an industry of pleasure. We have to keep that in mind when considering a Pandemic like this.

If Gen Con does take place, I got dibs on the Quarantine Specialist role card.

Who knows what happens after today's 3:00 PM news conf. Word is that DC is making an emergency declaration.

The other issue is that Gen Con is not NCAA NBA NHL ECHL XFL IndyCar racing etc.. What do I mean by that? Gen Con really is a small business. I bet they only have 20 FT employees or less. (correct me if I'm wrong) They only generate revenue 4 days a year the other 361 they are living off that revenue. These other large groups are not only canceling or postponing events they are offering full refunds or refunds on the season tickets that have not been used. They can afford to do so.

If for some reason Gen Con has canceled after the refund date and they give full refunds they don't have money to operate the rest of the year. If they are forced to cancel  after the refund date and they keep all the money well end up coming across as jerks, no offense meant.

IMO they are walking a very long tightrope ten thousand feet up in the air without a safety. I really feel sorry for him

Much smaller than GenCon, but they are still expecting about 2000 people now. Down 20%.
It’s still on, so I guess Wisconsin is letting it go.
i will report after the event.

The only reason GaryCon is going on is because Wisconsin has not put a gathering ban into place yet and since they haven't the host site won't let the con out of the contract.

Adepticon got cancelled yesterday,  its bigger then Garycon but its not Gencon huge.

As far as Gencon, I think realistically wait and see is the best course, but an official announcement from the con explaining prelim plans on what would happen if things are cancelled(especially around financial questions) would go a long way to ease peoples minds.

There are several major festivals that have been cancelled with no refunds to guests due to this virus, so its a valid fear for people even though I hope Gencon does the right thing.

I wonder if it is an insurance issue? There are insurance companies that would indemnify in case a convention could not occur. Perhaps they need the government to officially ban events.

Event Cancellation Insurance

Event Cancellation Insurance protects your financial commitment in cases of reduced attendance, postponement, curtailment, change of venue, or cancellation.Covers a loss from:

  • Terrorism
  • Weather (Flood, Hurricane, Blizzard, etc..)
  • Fire at a venue
  • Communicable Disease
  • Airline cancellation or delay
  • Labor Union strike
  • Transportation issues
  • Earthquake

I don't understand what is so hard to understand.

GenCon will wait and see. That is a complete statement.

If you are worried and want GenCon to cancel, just cancel your own stuff.

If you are worried that GenCon may not refund you after June 14, just cancel your own stuff or take the risk knowing that GenCon needs registration fees to do all of the stuff they do year round (including keeping this website running and moderated).

If you want to get into an argument after the refund cutoff date, well, wait and see what happens.

Considering that a number of events are not being outright cancelled but instead postponed (the New York International Auto Show has been postponed until August — autoshowny.com — and the Louisiana Secretary of State is requesting that the state’s Presidential primary be postponed until June 20), I’d be surprised if GenCon announces any schedule change at all, though it would make sense to include additional hygiene guidance for attendees concerned about the Coronavirus.

If you have a badge and are concerned about possibly contracting Coronavirus at GenCon, you have until June 14 to request a refund via e-mail, based on the existing GenCon refund policy. Don’t assume that policy will change.

If Gen Con is canceled, I'm guessing I won't be the only person wandering around downtown Indy looking for someone to play games with.

I'm not the best at math, but i think 70k is more than 250.
well I can't dispute your math but do you think that the ban on gatherings larger than 250 people is eternal?  Surely someday there will come a time when it is lifted?  Gen Con isn't for a while yet, hence the wait and see stance

Obviously the timing matters. Once we are a few months out, if the ban isn’t lifted then the con couldn’t go on. People need to have definite travel, plus the exhibitors can’t just change on a dime.

Origins comes first in June and the Governor has the same ban. If it gets cancelled, that’s a bad sign for a Gencon.
